Formula SAE is a student engineering design competition where a fictional manufacturing company contracts a design team to develop a small formula style race car for the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Teams then take their completed cars to compete in competitions held around the world. There are 3 competitions held in the United States (California, Michigan, Virginia) and 5 others held internationally in Australasia, Brazil, the U.K, Japan and Italy. This competition allows engineering students to come together to build the best race car possible and compare their skills against worldwide teams of other engineering students. Teams are judged in both static and dynamic events including Acceleration, Skid Pad, Autocross, Fuel Economy, Endurance, Cost, Presentation and Design. This year the Colorado State FSAE team is building a car to compete in the Formula SAE West Series in California. The car is designed by senior mechanical engineering students while other engineering students divide into separate departments to assist with the development and manufacturing of the FSAE race car.
