Preliminary Pre-Visit Procedures
Preliminary Information
With the preliminary information supplied by the
manufacturer, the IAC conducts any necessary library research, analyzes
various production processes, identifies potential energy conservation,
pollution prevention, and productivity improvement opportunities,
and determines what further data are needed. A simple map of the
plant and a list of the larger more significant equipment is useful
to plan what data sould be collected, and thus what measurement
equipment should be brought by the team on the plant visit.
Safety
Safety is of pimary concern to the IAC program,
so recommendations for personal protection equipment (PPE) to be
worn by Student Project Engineers and the visit leader are requested
from the plant. Typically, each Student Project Engineer wears hard-toed
shoes, safety glasses, and ear plugs for manufacturing environments.
Hard hats may be required fo certain manufacturing plants, and those
can be brought along or supplied by the plant. For plants producing
food items, usually items such as hair nets, smocks, or heavy coats
for freezer areas are supplied by the plant. For certain large plants,
complex procedures, or where the compny has policy, the visiting
team may undergo special safety training once they are on he site.
A Student Leader and Student Safety Officer are assigned for each
plant visit.
