CSU's Formula Hybrid's Legacy

2009 Car   2008-2009

2009 marked the first year of competition for the Formula Hybrid team. The design involved installing a simple, robust, parallel chain drive hybrid powertrain into the
rear of the 1998 Formula SAE chassis. Denver company NiLar donated prototype Nickel-Metal hydride batteries to
use as the accumulators, and a Curtis controller and Megasquirt programmer kept the gasoline and electric systems in sync.

The design proved reliable, and the focus on the large electric motor allowed the team to place first in both acceleration events, for an overall 2nd place finish.

2007-2008

Tthe first year Formula Hybrid was offered as a Senior Design Project at CSU was 2007. The team adapted the 1997 FSAE car with a Unique Mobility controller, 250cc Kawasaki Ninja engine, and lead-acid batteries, some of which was borrowed from previous senior design projects like the solar car.

Unfortunately, the car was not complete by the time of competition. This car donated it's engine and a considerable wealth of knowledge to the '08-'09 team.
