Information About Your Computer

From time to time ENS may ask you for information about the computer you are on, to help troubleshoot problems or for other support services. Here is information on how to find the information ENS asks for.

IP Address

Any Computer

  1. Go to WhatIsMyIP.com.
  2. This web page will show you your IP address.
NOTE: If the IP Address begins with 129.82, it means you are part of the CSU network.

Computer Name

Any Lab Computer

Every ENS lab computer (including the Sun Ray Windows Desktop and the Virtual Lab) has the computer name on the desktop, at the top left of the screen. Where it normally shows "Computer", we have changed it so that it shows the computer name, followed by the user name in parentheses. For example, it may read "MDS1C1 (joeuser)". We just need to know the computer name, which is the part before the parantheses.

Windows 7

  1. Click the Windows button in the lower-left corner.
  2. Right-click on the Computer icon on the right side of the Start Menu, and select Properties.
  3. The "View basic information about your computer" screen shows up. Look in the section titled "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings". Full computer name is what you are looking for.

Windows XP

  1. Click the Start button in the lower-left corner, select Control Panel, then double-click System.
    OR
  2. Right-click on the My Computer icon on the desktop, and select Properties.
  3. Select the Computer Name tab.
  4. Full computer name is what you are looking for.

Admin Desktop

The Admin Desktop has the computer name on the desktop, at the top left of the screen. Where it normally shows "Computer", we have changed it so that it shows the computer name, followed by the user name in parantheses. For example, it may read "ENGR-ADMIN1 (joeuser)". We just need to know the computer name, which is the part before the parantheses.

Classic Sun Ray

The Classic Sun Ray desktop has the computer name on the desktop background. Look for the text that reads "You are on: (server name)". For example, it may read "You are on: sunfire2".
