Thunderbird Client Information

For general use information about Mozilla Thunderbird, read the Thunderbird help web site or use the internal help within the program.

Set up Thunderbird for the College of Engineering

Configuring Thunderbird for other operating systems should be similar. If you need assistance, please contact ENS.

  1. Start Thunderbird.
  2. Enter in your full name,and Engineering email address like this: your_username@engr.colostate.edu.
  3. Click Continue. This should automatically fill in the incoming and outgoing server as mail.engr.colostate.edu.
  4. Click Manual Setup.
  5. Fill in the organization as: Colorado State University.
  6. In the left pane, click Server Settings.
  7. Under "Security Settings" Select "SSL/TLS" for the Connection security. Authentication method should be "Normal password".
  8. Click the Advanced button. The IMAP server directory should be blank.
  9. Un-check "Show only subscribed folders".
  10. Next to "Maximum number of server sessions to cache", enter 1.
  11. In the Personal Namespace box, enter "" (double quotes).
  12. Click OK to go back to the Account Settings screen.
  13. In the left pane, click Composition & Addressing. In the first drop down menu select "start my reply above the quote".
  14. In the left pane, click Synchronization & Storage. Then uncheck "keep messages for this account on this computer".
  15. In the left pane, click Outgoing Server (SMTP), then click edit.
    1. Set the Connection security to StartTLS
    2. For Authentication method, select Normal password
    3. Enter your Engineering login name in the "User Name" field
    4. Set the port to 465
    5. Click OK to go back to the main screen
  16. Click on the "Get Mail" button on the toolbar.
  17. Enter your Engineering account password. Check the box next to "Use Password Manager to remember this password" if you want Thunderbird to save the password so you don't have to enter it each time. Click OK.
  18. You may need to click OK to the informative message about saving passwords.
  19. Done! You should now see your Inbox as well as any other IMAP folders you may have.

Set up Thunderbird LDAP for CSU's Directory Service:

  1. From the "Tools" menu, select "Account Settings".
  2. Click the "Composition and Addresses" tab on the left.
  3. Select "Use a different LDAP server" and hit the "Edit Directories" button.
  4. Click on Add.
  5. Type CSU Directory for the name.
  6. In "Hostname", enter ds.colostate.edu, Leave the port at 389.
  7. Enter the following information for "Base DN": dc=colostate,dc=edu
  8. Click OK twice.
  9. In the pull-down menu, make sure "CSU Directory" is selected.
  10. Click OK to exit.
