Welcome to the Colorado Anemometer Loan Program
The Governor's Energy Office (GEO) is partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Powering America program and Colorado State
University to provide the Colorado Anemometer Loan
Program (ALP). Anemometers measure wind parameters that are used to
determine the feasibility for wind energy. The anemometers are rotated
on an annual basis throughout the State to qualified applicants.
We have information for various types of users, as follows:
Wind developers - You can find information about the collected wind data from previous and current ALP sites.
Potential ALP applicants - You can first find information about the general wind resource in your area and the collected wind data from previous and current anemometer sites. If you are interested in applying, there is an online application form.
Small scale wind aficionados - Suppose you already know that you have good wind or a nearby ALP site shows that there is good wind in your area. Perhaps you want to skip the ALP loan application process and go right to installing a turbine. We have information and links that can help you get started.
Status As Of July 30, 2008:
There are currently six (6) anemometer sites recording wind data throughout Colorado on 20 meter towers owned by the GEO at the following locations:
- Castle Rock (Site No. 55) - Installed 4/24/2008
- Coalmont (Site No. 56) - Installed 5/3/2008
- Doyleville (Site No. 57) - Installed 5/20/2008
- Palisade (Site No. 58) - Installed 5/21/2008
- Wellington (Site No. 59) - Installed 6/12/2008
- Yampa (Site No. 61) - Installed 7/17/2008
There are also three (3) anemometer sites with 30m GEO towers at the following locations:
- Elizabeth (Site No. 18) - Installed at 30m on a cell tower on 7/5/2006
- Schriever AFB (Site No. 54) - Installed 10/18/2007
- Byers (Site No. 60) - Installed 7/11/2008
You can also find information about four other towers, three of which are not owned by GEO. There are three 30m towers owned by San Isabel Electric Association at sites in the Walsenburg area, as follows:
- Walsenburg Airport - North a.k.a Potts (Site No. 44) - Installed 2/1/2006
- Walsenburg Airport - South a.k.a Mapes (Site No. 46) - Iinstalled 2/1/2006
- Plavic Mesa (Site No. 49) - Installed 3/15/2006
There is also a 50m tower installed through the GEO's Community Wind program in cooperation with Baca Green Energy at Stonington, near Lamar (No. 51; installed 3/26/2007). This tower was removed from Stonington on July 22, 2008. The tower will soon be reinstalled in Huerfano County (at N 37° 38' 56.08'' and W 105° 9' 57.18'').
We're finishing up the the process of removing towers from their old sites and relocating to sites based on the applications received from March 2006 through January 2008. We've selected the top 20 candidates for the two 20m towers and one 30m tower that are available. Right now, we've got a Site Agreement for one new site and are looking to schedule installations at this site. We're hoping to relocate and install all of the towers by August 31.
Our most recent tower was a 20m tower installed east of Yampa in Routt County on July 17. The next towers to be installed include the following:
- A 20m tower to be installed in Estes Park in Larimer County in August 2008
